WALKING
AND HIKING
The Outer Sognefjord and Dalsfjord area includes more than 100 walking
trials, ranging from easy walks on the islands and lowland to more challenging
treks to mountains such as Blegja in Askvoll (alt. 1,305 m.) Trips to
lower mountains, which you will find througout the whole area, offer terrific
views of the coast, skerries and the sea. To the south, Høyanger borders
on the Stølsheimen national park, one of Norway´s most popular
trekking areas. Most trails in the Outer Sognefjord and Dalsfjord area are
extensively used and therefore easily visible, but for more challenging routes
a map is recommended. Map folders with descriptions of the various trails
can be bought from tourist offices and most accommodation. (Engl. and Germ.
language) NOK 30-50 .
ALDEN – ASKVOLL
Also known as the “Norwegian Horse”, Alden is an old and pronounced
landmark for sailors along the coast. It rises almost vertically out of the
sea to a height of 481 metres above sea level and is visible from more than
100 km out at sea. There is a marked path to the top, accessible using the
scheduled boat service from Askvoll.
BLEGJA – ASKVOLL
The 1304 metre high Blegja in Askvoll is more of a challenge, but the prize
is a magnificent view! You can see the Jostedal glacier to the East and as
far as Snønipa and the Ålfot glacier in the North. To the West
you can follow the coastline from Solund to Hornelen at the same time as
enjoying a view far out to sea. The trip takes a whole day.
LIHESTEN – HYLLESTAD
The majestic and bewitching Lihesten in Hyllestad is one of the most prominent
mountains on the coast. There are several marked routes to the peak, over
714 metres above sea level, with views both straight out to the open sea
and inwards over the fjords. Lihesten also has a number of good fishing lakes.
THE NORTHSEE TRAIL: VÆRLANDET – BULANDET
The Nordsjøløype trail on Værlandet is marked and
starts directly from the ferry quay. The trail goes past the characteristic
Klettane mountains, and you can take a detour up the Høgekletten
Mountain (163 metres above sea level). The route is about 2.5 km long
and joins the main trail again by the Loran-C mast. From here you can
either walk or cycle further west along the road to Melvær and
Bulandet or return to the ferry quay on Værlandet.
A brochure describing the various walks is available in the local shops
and it is possible to rent bicycles in in both
Værlandet and Bulandet.
THE TRONDHEIM POST-ROAD
The historic mail route from Bergen and Trondheim, The post-road goes
through Fjaler, Hyllestad and Gulen districts. Built between 1801 and
1806, it passes over many beautiful stone bridges. An experience for
the walker or off-road cyclist. On the postroad lies a beautiful cluster
of five authentic, newly renovated
grist mills.
STØLSHEIMEN – HØYANGER
Stølsheimen Nature Reserve was created in 1990. The 367 sq. km. area
stretches from high mountain-tops, through fertile valleys and sweeps over
steep meadows down to the fjords. This area is perhaps best known for its mountain
farms and lakes. From Ortnevik there are marked footpaths up to Stølsheimen
and from Bjordal you may drive up the Stordal road to the summit (2.390 ft.
above sea) to get an overall view of the are.
ARBORETUM– SOLUND
The Coastal Arboretum in Hardbakke is a collection of trees and plants of largely
indigenous species. There are 60 different species planted out hewre and there
throughout the area. The rhododendron collection is a sight to behold in early
summer. Integrated into the arboretum, there is a 5 km. footpath over a variety
of terrain with a wonderful view over the outer Sognefjord. Also a marked foot-path
up to the top of the Ravnenipa.
THE
NORTHSEE TRAIL – STEINSUNDØY
Nordsjøløypa in Solund is a path through outlying areas from
Bjørnefjord to Stokkevåg. It climbs gradually along the base of
the mountain through terrain consisting of mountain and heath land. The walk
takes 1 – 1,5 hour and is an ideal family outing. The trip continues
by rowing boat inland past Litle Færøy, Gullholmen, Råkeneset
and on to Strand. For more information about the trip by rowing boat, please
contact Stiftinga Jensbua (Tel.: +47-57 73 90 20).
THE NORTHSEE TRAIL – KORSSUND
Marked trail that coincides with the road in some parts but mostly
follows old tracks and footpaths northwards through the countryside towards
Lammetun. The trail starts in Korssund harbour and continues for about
3 km towards Lammetunsundet. From here you can take a prebooked boat through
the narrow sounds on a half-hour trip back to the harbour. The boat must
be booked in the shop before you start on the trail. You can also buy a
detailed description of the trail at the shop. Boat trip: adults NOK 50,

the Dals Fjord. Vikja and Kleivane are the starting points for trips

the Heileberget Mountain, Kringla, the Ertrefjellet Mountain and Blegja.
There is a marked trail to Nipebu and on to Rivedal, Stong Fjord, Markavatnet
Lake and Massbu (Laukeland). This area is considered very special and
an exceptional experience for everyone who visits it, adults and children
alike. Walking along the old farm track will g-ive youan insight into
a particularly rich plant, bird and animal life. There is also a rich
cultural history shared with us through Jakob Sande’s poetry.
THE
NORTHSEE TRAIL – FÆRØY
There is a marked
trail from Henja on the west and the marina at Vassdalen. The old gravel
track takes you across the island, past farms and through
a green and fertile landscape where you are more likely to see grazing
calves than cars. The path continues along tracks and parts of the old
cart track that led to the cowshed and the salmon-fishing platform. At
Espa, which is where we turn back, there are panoramic views out to Alden,
Værlandet, Bulandet and the mountains in the interior. The entire
route also offers plenty of magnificent views of the island.
